George Athans

BENNINGTON - George Athans, 83, of Camp Winamac, died July 11, 2005, at the Monadnock Community Hospital, Peterborough.

He was surrounded by his family and passed away peacefully.

He was born on June 5, 1922 in Clinton, Mass., son of Greek immigrants. He earned two master's degrees, one in administration from the University of Michigan and a second in applied mathematics, from Columbia University.

Throughout his academic career he excelled in athletics and lettered in football, playing with the Michigan Wolverines. The following 32 years, he taught and coached at the Horace Mann Private School in the Bronx, N.Y. From 1967 forward he spent the summers in Bennington, directing Camp Winamac, a riding and water sports camp.

He is survived by immediate family, his wife, daughters and a son. Two granddaughters and one grandson also revere his memory. George's two brothers and two sisters also celebrate their oldest sibling.

His parting wish to everyone was to meet him by his tree.

There are no calling hours. A service will be announced by the family at a later date.
