CAMPERS REFUSE TO GO HOME !!!
25 YEARS AFTER WINAMAC FOUNDED, CAMPERS ARE STILL SEEN IN THE AREA.
More than a dozen former Winamac Campers and Counselors are still living in New Hampshire, some only minutes from camp itself. Among these die-hards are:
Cindy Athans; Bob Warner; Larry Warner; Joanna (Peterson) Magoon; Vicky Turner; Jeanne (Degan) Hogan; Julie Brown; Ann Westrupp; and (from time to time) George and Doris Athans!... There are many others as well, and we will mention them as soon as someone reminds us...
No one is quite sure why these Winamacers are still here. Are they waiting to go to town? Did someone tell them to 'Wait By the Tree'??
WINAMAC SOLD TO LOCAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
HUTTER CONSTRUCTION BUYS WINAMAC IN 1995 AS EMPLOYEE RECREATION FACILITY
Winamac operated as a riding camp for the last time in the summer of 1992. For two more years, George rented camp to other camp groups, and finally he was forced by rising taxes to sell the camp in 1995 to Hutter Construction Company. The camp is still called Winamac, and George and Doris are often found living in the infirmary in the summer months. Former Winamacers will find some parts of camp more changed than others. Hutter decided that the red line, polish and german wings of the barn, and most of the cabins on the boys side were not to their liking. However the A-frame dining hall remains, the gymnasium, girls side cabins, tennis courts and water front look very much as they have always looked. And the lake? Well, it's perfect! especially on a hot August day!
